This residence sits in Lloyd Harbor, on Long Island’s Gold Coast. A respected mold remediation company introduced Detail Renovations to the homeowners after a frozen attic pipe ruptured, sending water throughout the home and affecting the kitchen, home office, and basement playroom. Because the residence is a secondary home for owners who live primarily in Manhattan, managing the work with discretion and independence mattered as much as the craftsmanship.

The kitchen was the most delicate part. Rather than removing and replacing the affected areas, we surgically extracted the existing countertop, stone, and appliances and preserved them for reinstallation in their original positions. We installed new flooring throughout the kitchen, adjoining family room, and office, and completely refinished and repainted the affected areas. No visible transition existed between what existed before the loss and what had been rebuilt.

Four Years Later

Four years later, a reverse-osmosis filtration system in the kitchen failed. Because the property is their secondary home, the water ran for about two weeks before they discovered it. The kitchen and basement were both severely affected. This time, the homeowners already knew who to call.

We returned to a home we knew intimately: its construction, its finishes, and the standards set during the original reconstruction. We couldn’t salvage several cabinets, so we reproduced them. The entire kitchen was refinished, portions painted in our shop and the rest completed on site for a consistent finish. New flooring went in throughout the kitchen and family room, and we refinished the entire first floor so the reconstructed areas would integrate naturally rather than read as isolated repairs.

In the basement we went beyond restoration, reimagining the space with significant upgrades including a custom bar. The result was not simply a restored basement. It improved the home.

A Lasting Relationship With the Home

Returning to a residence we have reconstructed before is a real advantage. We know how the home was assembled, which materials were used, and what matters to the homeowners. Managing a major reconstruction from Manhattan can be demanding, and our role is to remove that burden: coordinate the moving pieces, communicate throughout, manage the trades, and stay personally involved in the details that determine the quality of the finished home. Homeowners should not have to manage a reconstruction. They should be able to trust that it is being managed for them.
