Project Overview
This renovation project represents one of our most dramatic transformations. Initially, the home featured rustic design elements, including pine walls, wood beams, and heavy wooden accents. Now, it has been completely modernized with sleek, pale white finishes and a clean, minimalist look. The change is truly like night and day.
Unique Element
The project was done in collaboration with Tara Bennett Design. As the contractor, I was involved from the early stages, evaluating the space and conceptualizing a vision. The space consisted of three previously combined apartments, and although the layout was established, there were many changes as the design evolved. The methodical approach to the project allowed the homeowner to live in the apartment throughout the renovation.
Updating the kitchen, which included completely reconfiguring it, eliminating an awkward bathroom, and expanding the kitchen to include an island with banquette seating, significantly improved the space. The central staircase, which initially divided the kitchen and living room, was reconstructed to a new layout that wrapped along a wall, making the space more open and adding under-stair storage. The curved glass railing is a stunning feature in the home.
Custom Creations
Throughout the renovation, we focused on modernizing and lighting the entire space. We refinished the existing pine floors with a white oak finish, used a custom plaster mix to cover heavy brickwork on the fireplaces, and installed sleek new heating systems. In addition, we installed custom glass and metal doors, revamped all the closets, and incorporated cutting-edge lighting.
During the demolition, we discovered unused space, allowing us to double the size of the upstairs bathroom. This included installing a large shower, a concealed bench, and a closet. The transformation was impressive, with a modern wall-mounted toilet and a custom vanity. Recognizing the existing rustic bathrooms no longer fit the new design and highly pleased with the integrity of our work, the client added two additional bathroom renovations to our scope of work. The renovated bathrooms featured custom millwork, new lighting, and modern finishes.
In The Details
This project grew significantly from its original scope – ultimately, we transformed the home into a beautifully modern home working in sync with the client throughout the entire process.
